Tweet of the Year: Mike Cane On Black Wednesday
Written by David on December 31st, 2008On December 3, 2008, the big boys of the publishing industry were rattled with a wave of layoffs that included some of the top figures in the industry. It was shocking!
Doom! Doom! Doom!
Cue a thousand proclamations of the all-but-certain demise of the publishing industry.
Then, at 12:43 p.m. on December 4, Mike Cane produced this gem of the 140 character form.
Behold:

How many hundreds of thousands of characters of written media gloom and hand-wringing were gutted and left for dead by this single Tweet?
Now the question remains: are these downsized editors and publicists really so brilliant, or are/were they just part of the problem?
Thou art a truth-speaker, Mike Cane. May a million e-Books fall from the heavens and surround thee.

Oh, you just made my day with this post. Made. My. Day.
My publisher made big news on Black Wednesday. Indeed, you might say it led the pack…
Part of me was sad/upset/whatever, and part of me thought “Damn! Maybe now publishing will get with the 21st century program!”
So thanks for this. Great way to end the year!

Maureen, I agree. There’s something about nearly hitting rock bottom that inspires a bit of optimism. Sometimes things get so bad that there just has to be a resulting shake-up. Maybe, just maybe, things will be better on the other side.

Yes!!! That is so excellent. I have a feeling those people are not such hot shit, that they are old, crusty, pampered and stuck in the past. Maybe I’m wrong. I hope I’m wrong. I hope that at least some of them try what Make Cane suggests and that they succeed.
