The Rapture (Vice) President

Sam Harris defends elitism and guts Sarah Palin like a downed moose.

Ask yourself: how has “elitism” become a bad word in American politics? There is simply no other walk of life in which extraordinary talent and rigorous training are denigrated. We want elite pilots to fly our planes, elite troops to undertake our most critical missions, elite athletes to represent us in competition and elite scientists to devote the most productive years of their lives to curing our diseases. And yet, when it comes time to vest people with even greater responsibilities, we consider it a virtue to shun any and all standards of excellence. When it comes to choosing the people whose thoughts and actions will decide the fates of millions, then we suddenly want someone just like us, someone fit to have a beer with, someone down-to-earth-in fact, almost anyone, provided that he or she doesn’t seem too intelligent or well educated.

To restate the facts (since she is not permitted to give a legitimate interview to the press and will not be challenged on any of this by the Obama-Biden campaign), Sarah Palin believes:

  • Earth was created 6,000 years ago.
  • The Christian God directly and consciously controls world events.
  • That we are living in the “end-times,” meaning that the earthly world will soon collapse into warfare and chaos (beginning in the Middle East), and that true Christians will then be lifted bodily into Heaven where they will gleefully watch the rest of us burning and suffering below.
  • That the above is a good thing and that it will probably happen in her lifetime.

In three months she could potentially be in control of America’s nuclear codes.

How many swing voters actually know this?
