Amazing That It Still Exists at All

Written by David on December 12th, 2008

The non-profit feminist bookstore In Other Words is on the brink.  The Portland, Oregon (not Portland, Maine, as written in Publishers Lunch…thought that sounded too unlikely to be true) institution is now holding a fundraiser, hoping to raise $11,000 in the next 20 days to prevent (delay?) their closure.  The store’s web site now seems to be kaput, perhaps indicating that they’re getting a better response than their server can handle.

One might argue that a bookstore should be able to keep itself alive through sales alone.  But this is a not-for-profit.  It’s a store with a mission other than turning a profit.  Few question visual art institutions’ dependence upon charitable donations for their survival.  There’s no reason why a bookstore shouldn’t get in on the action.
