Film Review: Man On Wire

Written by David on January 29th, 2009

Far stranger than the lengths to which a person will go in pursuit of his passion are the sacrifices others are willing to make in order to help him.

Just finished watching this on Netflix. I got pretty emotional at the end, partly due to his success, but partly due to the fact that I was down there the morning of 9/11 and saw people jumping. He made the choice to walk and see that amazing view down, and lived to tell about it, while many others did not get that opportunity. Then, whether you saw it in the distance every day or if you spent any time in the building itself, walking through the lobbies on your way to work, shopping in the concourse or lunching with friends, taking the elevator up to Windows, and experiencing the seeming solidity of it all, it boggles the mind how it is all gone now. He was right to take the chance to walk, for no one else will ever be able to do such a thing.

Glad to hear it connected with you. Although the post-9/11 issue is not addressed in the movie, his experience really does come full circle. He was determined to walk a wire between the towers long before they were even built, when they were just an idea. And then there he is reminiscing about the towers after they have ceased to exist. Effectively demonstrates the ephemeral nature of just about everything and everyone. That arresting police officer really put well at the press conference, though he certainly didn’t know how the meaning of his words would change over time.
